JUDGES COMMENTS

The Eighth National Cocker Spaniel Championship Show was organised by the Cocker Spaniel Club of SA Inc. under the N.C.S.C. (Australia). This show was held over two days – 6th and 7th of June 1998 in the spacious all weather building of the Cheltenham Race Course in Adelaide. It was clear that many hours of hard work had been done by the committee and their helpers. The large ring was impressively decorated and there was an area set aside for photographs.

A special mention must be made of the Stewards. The training and licencing system is clearly of the highest standard, together with the ring organisation. English clubs would do well to take note. Many thanks to the committee for making this event so enjoyable to judge. Sal and I both loved Australia very much – we had no previous concept of the space you have. I feel very humble having learnt the distance exhibitors were prepared to travel to show their dogs at the National. We would like to thank you all for your wonderful hospitality and when we flew out of Adelaide, we felt we were leaving behind many friends. We shall return!

1: Gr Ch GUNLOCH BLUE STRATOS – Giggins
moved freely with lots of style. I am sure that this one could still show the youngsters a thing or two. Presented in hard condition. A credit to his owner.
2: Ch KOUBLA KILBY – Matthews
At eight years old, I can forgive a little but would show his quality better with less coat. Excellent Cocker type.
3: Ch JULEME FLYING SCOTSMAN – Balfour
Similar age to 2nd. Beautiful coat and condition. Well presented.
4: Ch MERRYJAY SWEET REVENGE – Kemp
Could change places with 2nd or 3rd on another day I’m sure.

BABY PUPPY (1,1)
1: SUNBURNIA BOSTON BLACKIE – Houston
Stood alone in this class. Would not stand or move with handler. Very happy and outgoing. Good bone.

MINOR PUPPY (4,3)
1: MISTDUKE WHATA GUY – Heatlie
Carrying a little too much weight. Needs to fine down. Gentle expression, lovely bone. Nice type all over.
2: SAGAPORE GOLD CHARM – East/McFarland
Lovely flat coat. Super front. Needs more time. Well handled.
3: ADJOBI SMOOTH OPERATOR – Rochester
Looked a little immature on the day. Just a baby.

PUPPY (3,3)
1: CLAREVALE WIND BAG – Gotch
True Cocker temperament. tried to make things difficult for his handler. Held top line on the move. Should settle given time.
2: MORNINGDALE FIRECRACKER – Casbolt
Nicely balanced puppy. Needs to fill out a bit. Lovely coat. Happy on the move.
3: JYNDEL BLACK WATCH – Hughes
A little fine through. Needs much more time.

JUNIOR (4,4)
1: GREYTHORN IZY TROUBLE – Greythorn Knls
Balanced red cocker, with good depth of chest. Good quarters. Moved well.
2: BRADBERN SO MERRY – P Smith
Masculine head. Well developed throughout. Good front. Well laid shoulders
3: TEEMSTAR PIE IN THE SKI – Matthews
Heavy coated black. needs to fill out.

INTERMEDIATE (7,7)

Good head and shoulders. Moved well in front. Well presented.
2: GREYTHORN IZY FOR REAL – Greythorn Knls
Not the shoulders of 1st. Well sprung ribs. lovely coat.

Good substance. Good head and eye.

Beautifully presented. true on the move. Lovely outline, excellent neck and shoulders, lots of style. This one could trouble my top winner on another day.

Another cocker from this kennel in hard condition. Not quite up to 1st. Has a lot to offer.
3: Ch LEAVENWORTH LIMITED EDITION – Giggins
Quality black. presented well.

Eyecatching light blue. Moved withconfidence and drive. Tail never stopped wagging.

Well sprung ribs. Good neck and shoulders. Moved with style.
3: WILLOPOINT STATUS QUO – Barton
Typey, with good bone and substance. Not as settled as 1st and 2nd.

Note: the Baby class was a real pleasure for me. In the U.K. we do not get a chance to judge cockers under 6 months of age. I am amazed at the high quality of trimming and presentation. A few shy dogs.

On his own in this class. Beautiful flat coat. Good neck and shoulders. Well presented.

PUPPY (6,3)

Good depth of chest. Moved well in front, happy on the move.
2: ASHMERE SPECIAL BLEND – Burbidge
Balanced cocker. Not as settled on the move as 1st. Lovely coat. Good presentation.
3: KEBARLEA THE FIREKRACKER – Hutt
Well laid shoulders. Sweet head and eye. Needs more time to grow into himself.

JUNIOR (8,5)
1: JYNDEL THE SQUEEZE IS ME – Hughes
Dark blue cocker, quality coat, presented to perfection. Very true movement. Good head with square muzzle. Won the class with a bit to spare.
2: ISTABRI IM AN AUSSIE – C Smith
Good cocker type. Good neck and shoulders. True movement in front. Short coupled.
3: Ch SPANOMAC THE DANGERMAN – McDougall
Full of himself. Did not want to stand. Short coupled. Very appealing.
4: ASHMERE FLASHMAN – Burbidge

Good neck and shoulders. Square muzzle. True front with super feet.
2: Ch DOULTON TOTAL TAKEOVER – Job
Impressed by handler using loose lead. Stood four square with excellent front assembly. Good coat and angulation.
3: RAVENLOFT WOLFMAN JACK – Horne
Dark blue of good cocker type. Would not stand on this occasion.
4: Ch WATERVAAL OUTA MY WAY – Field/Hansen

Beautifully coated steel blue. Well angulated upper arm and shoulders. Good type.

The very best of the best. Put down to perfection. Covered the ground with drive and presence. Balanced with no  exaggeration. Quality through and through. A joy to handle.
2: Gr Ch FEENIX FAIR STAR – Werner/Daniels/McFadden
Good cocker type. Masculine head. Well made with plenty of substance. Well ribbed. Unlucky to meet 1st.
3: Ch DONNAS FLASHFYRE – Daniel
Good neck and shoulders with super upper arm and front assembly. Would have preferred more work in the head.

Short coupled. Well ribbed up. At 10 years, she is still every inch a merry cocker.
3: Ch & NZ Ch CAMDACH ICEY STARE – Emerson
Shown in top condition. True movement. Another excellent 10 year old.

A little more mature. Happy on the move.

MINOR PUPPY (6,5)

Best of shoulders. Happy on the move. Good front, sweetest of heads.
2: CLAREVALE ALLEY CAT – Gotch/Spencer
Good bit of blue/black mating here. Very short coupled. Clean cut, well bodied. One for the future.
3: ADJOBI FORGET ME NOT – Rochester
Wanted to play and who can blame her. Tried hard not to stand. Well handled under the circumstances.

This was a difficult class to assess because they were all so immature as you would expect.

PUPPY (5,5)

Typey golden bitch. Happy on the move, never stopped using her tail. Looked very well. Beautiful coat.
2: JYNDEL WISP OF HEATHER – Hughes
Good head and expression. Super flat coat. Not showing quite as well as 1st.
3: LAKANUKI HEARTBEAT – Miles
Not as forward as 1st and 2nd. Needs to come together.

JUNIOR (1,1)
1: TEEMSTAR WILDEST DREAMS – Matthews
Well ribbed up. Good head and expression. Moved well. Stood alone in this class.

INTERMEDIATE (9,8)
1: BELLESAM DELILATFUL – Preston
Lovely type. Shown in very hard condition. Good depth of chest. Super neck and shoulders. Moved true front and back. Level topline held on the move. Would like to take this one home!
2: YUMBEAI MAPLE LEAF – Douglas
Unlucky to meet 1st. Similar in type. Well chiselled head. A merry cocker.
3: ADJOBI HOMEWARD BOUND – Rochester
Well coated bitch. Needs more time. A little less coat would improve. Moved freely.
4: JYNDEL CARAMEL SILK – Hughes
