The Cocker Spaniel Club of S.A. Inc – 44th Championship Show

Judge: Dr Alvin Grossman (USA) June 19th 1999

What started out as a cold, rainy and gloomy day, ended in brilliant sunshine as Dr Grossman (USA) chose Gr Ch Elswood Dream machine as his Best in Show and the black Puppy bitch Riverbell Els Wood Witch as Runner-up. In commenting on his entry, Dr Grossman was laudatory in his observations of good sportsmanship in the ring.

Parti-Colours
In parti-colours, his overall comments included the observation that heads and expressions were good throughout and the vast majority of dogs had more than adequate chests. drape of Stifle also seemed consistently good with well let down hocks and no slippage. Pads were hard and pasterns strong.

Where improvement seemed to be needed is striving for a better shoulder layback and much less weight on the dogs. These are sporting dogs and should be shown in lean and hard condition. Hindquarters should show the results of a better conditioning program as many of the exhibits were soft.

Solids
As an overall comment, I thought the reds were a bit more consistent in quality than the blacks. It appeared that many of the blacks were more rangy in appearance without the finishing coat that would have given them a more balanced appearance. Many of the dogs had beautiful necks blenmding into nice shoulders. In solids too, there needs to be more attention paid to shoulder layback and overweight soft muscled dogs.

Heads were uniformly good with good eye placement and expression. Coats in the reds were more than adequate. In both parti-colours and solid colours, there were many promising youngsters which should insure the health of the breed for many years to come.

I must say that many of my decisions were quite close and I commented to the exhibitors in a number of classes how little separated first to last. My two CC winners were especially sound and typey. Neither was a small specimen but they had what every judge looks for; balance, balance and balance. Overall, I enjoyed judging the show and wish to especially thank my steward, Harold King, for all his help and guidance and to Rosemary Kemp, all things to all people and an especially knowledgeable dog person.
